Absolutely Great 02.10.10
An Animated Conversation by Pat Robinson 02.03.10 1. Hulk: Planet Hulk - This DVD hits the shelves this week. It is Marvel’s newest animated telling of an actual comic book storyline. This is the story of an exiled Hulk fighting alongside an alien race against an invading enemy. It shows Big Green as a warrior ala Conan using a sword and battle ax to fight the good fight. Comics due Feb. 11th:
To Reboot or Not by Pat Robinson 01.27.10 Superman needs to get away from the Richard Donner version of the character to a more action type of hero. A very good man in,,at times, a very evil world. And no more Luthor. Daredevil needs just a little tweeking. The only thing I didn’t like was the kung-fu style fight scenes. I even liked Affleck. Elektra just needs to start over. More butt kicking assassin and less afflicted soul. The only thing I really disliked about the Fantastic Four movies have been the characterizations of the villains. Doom was all wrong and Galactus was a joke.
Comics Due Feb. 4th: Superman in Church by Pat Robinson 01.20.10
This week my Sunday School class embarked on a several week study of religion in comic books. Our study is based on the book “Holy Superheroes!” by Greg Garrett. This book was a gift from classmate Nancy to me and fellow comic book fans Mary and Brian Johnson. We have decided to use it as our guide to learn new things about our favorite heroes and heroines and teach Nancy about the world we all enjoy so much. A few years ago the Edge’s fearless editor turned me on to information on the net considering the faith of the heroes. Since then it has continued to fascinate me. I’m looking forward to the next few weeks. It will be fun to combine the two main forces in my life: my faith and my comic books. A Great Year for Comics by Pat Robinson 12.30.09 2009 will be known as the year of things black and dark in the comic book world. Blackest Night for DC and the Dark Reign for Marvel were each large universe-spanning events. They each served their planned purpose. The Blackest Night showed that even dead characters still can kick ass, even if it’s their old friends’ asses. The Dark Reign showed that sometimes the bad guys win. Comics due Jan. 7th:

Lord of the Rings by Pat Robinson 12.02.09 Comic Books Due Dec 10th:
Things Comic Book Fans Have to be Thankful For by Pat Robinson 11.24.09 1. Free Comic Book Day: This annual event to introduce comic books to a new generation of fans has grown to a world-wide celebration. From special publications such as the Blackest Night promo issue, to personal appearances by comic pros at local comic shops, to Columbus’ own event at the library with reading by true heroes from the military and fire and police departments, this has become a day in which to look forward. 2. Boom Studios: This fast-growing comic book company has brought back the joy of the all-ages comic book product. Mickey Mouse, Donald Duck, the Incredibles, and Cars are just a few of the titles that fans of all ages can enjoy. 3. Geoff Johns: There are a lot of great writers in the comic book industry, but this has been Johns' year. He has brought us the “Blackest Night” storyline, a new telling of Superman’s story in “Superman Secret Origins” and the return of Barry Allen in “Flash Rebirth”. Besides his daily writing chores he also written last year’s Smallville episode “Legion” and the upcoming Justice Society episode. This man deserved his award of best comic book writer from the fans at the Spike Scream Awards. 4. Parents: As a comic shop owner, I have more fun watching parents passing on their love of comic books to their children. Many of these kids know their superheroes on sight before learning to count or spell. It is a true joy to see that there is a new generation learning to appreciate reading comic books. I hope everyone has a great Thanksgiving holiday. I am most thankful for all of you who are my friends and customers.

A proven commodity with Robert Downey Jr. returning to play the lead , with a new Rhodey played by Don Cheadle, and a new villian Whiplash played by Mickey Rourke. Green Lantern - Ryan Reynolds will play the cosmic police officer in this 2011 release. according to Reynolds production will start in the next few months. Jonah Hex - This longstanding DC anti hero will come to theatres in 2010. This western based character will be played by Josh Brolin. The villian will be played by John Malkovich. Kick Ass - Even with Nick Cage in the movie this should be good. Based on the comic series by Mark Millar about young adults who want to be costumed heroes.
Comic Book Fans, don't forget the Columbus Sci Fi Convention and Toy Show this Saturday at the Coca Cola Science Center from 10:30 am to 9pm. Special Guest Sam Witwer (Doomsday from Smallville).
Ask the Comic Book Guy by Pat Robinson 09.30.09 I always point them to my all-ages comic book rack and see if the child recognizes anything. This could be Scooby Doo or Bugs Bunny from catoons on tv, Cars or the Incredibles from movies, to Sonic the Hedgehog from video games. Also, DC and Marvel have youth-based stories of their mainstays of Superman or Spiderman. With their parent's help, they usually find something they like and a new customer is born. If I just want to collect for investment, what do I buy? Well if I knew what was going to rise in value, I would be a lot richer than I am. If you want to pick items that have a proven track record: first appearances of characters, a famous artist drawing the book, or a big universe changing event. If your want to go back and pick up items whose values have already begun to rise, get it at a low price and be willing to hold on to it for a few decades. If I've been out of comic books for a few years, how do I catch up? Graphic novels. This has become a great tool to restart interest in the characters and stories. You can read several years worth of stories in just a handful of books. The cost at times is better than buying all the original issues as they may have risen in price. In the future I will try to answer more questions. If you have one e-mail, me at

Bugs Bunny/Batman vs. Mickey/Spiderman by Pat Robinson 09.16.09
What You May Be Missing by Pat Robinson 09.09.09 Justice League"Cry for Justice" is telling the story of how the new JLA roster is being formed. Without the core triad of Superman, Batman, and Wonder Woman, new heroes are stepping up to the plate. I just have one word: Congorilla. Adventure Comics has restarted with the return of Conner Kent, the cloned son of Superman and Lex Luthor. He is trying to live up to the standards of both his fathers. "Do Androids Dream of Electric Sheep" is comic book adaptation of Phillip K. Dick's famous work that the movie Blade Runner was based upon. At 24 issues, it can be a detailed telling of the original story. "Mavels Project" tells about the characters of the early days of the so-called Marvel Universe. Human Torch(not of the Fantastic Four), Submariner, young Steve Rogers, and others of the WWII era are shown in their pre-hero days. Star Wars Invasion is something new for the George Lucas universe: a threat that has nothing to do with Sith. It is an alien attack by a new race of aliens from way out there. Archie Comics is having a wedding. Archie Andrews is going to marry Veronica Lodge. Poor Betty has been asked to be the maid of honor. Stay tuned. There are always new and inovative projects being tried by the many comic book companies. Go to your local comic book shop and see what's new.

So I thought I would I would prepare you and give you some material to read to prepare. At Marvel, the main overall story is "Dark Reign" As the summer progresses, Norman Osborn will continue to solidify his position of power in the Marvel Universe. If you have not kept up, read the"Secret Invasion" graphic novel to see how Osborn rose to such a powerful position. Captain America' title will resume original numbering soon with issue #600. Something shocking has been promised. To prepare , read any of the Ed Brubaker Captain America graphic novels. Spiderman recently encountered his greatest shock in his entire career: Aunt May in bed with J. Jonah Jameson's father. Free Advice and A Canuklehead's Closeup Part 2 by Pat Robinson 05.06.09
Well, comic shop owners have enjoyed and survived another Free Comic Book Day. Over 2000 comic shops across the country had thousands of comic book fans lined up for their free goodies, spent time with famous comic writers and artists, dressed up as a multitude of heroes and villians, and had a good time. From the pictures at FreeComicBookDay.com it apears it was again a great sucess. Here in Columbus, Georgia, the previously reported Heroes Read event was considered a great success. Almost 400 kids and their parents picked up their free comics plus enjoyed rubbing elbows with the police, fire department and military. These real-life heroes read while art teachers showed how to draw the kids' favorite characters and hopefully many new fanboy and fangirls were born. Local media helped greatly in promoting and covering the event including the Edge Magazine's editor-in-chief Wes Carroll. Hopefully this will be an annual event in Columbus.

World Without Superman by Pat Robinson 03.31.09
While the spotlight has recently been on Gotham City due to the "Battle of the Cowl" storyline, Metropolis and the world is dealing with an absent Superman. In the aftermath of the Braniac story where the superpowered Kandorians were released, Superman has chosen to help them move to New Krypton and is away from Earth for a time. Never fear, Metropolis is not without protection. Before he left, the big blue Boy Scout, released the hero from the planet Daxum, Mon-el from the Phantom Zone and has paired him with the Golden Age hero the Guardian to watch over his adopted home-town. These adventures will take place in "Superman" It should be interesting to see a new superpowered character ,who has been able to "see" our world from the Phantom Zone. Over in the other "super" title "Action", Superman has been replaced by two characters who were originally introduced in the 1960's: Nightwing (not Dick Grayson) and Flamebird. In the sixties, they were Kandor's own heroes who protected the Kryptonian city much like Batman, with technology and detective skills. Now that they are on Earth with the yellow sun, they are empowered like Superman to handle many of the Kandorians who have chosen to stay on Earth and cause a multitude of problems. Superman will continue to have adventures in the "World of New Kyrpton" comic title. He must deal with the return of General Zod, the star of comics, movies and television.
Pat's Picks for April 9th: DC: Battle of the Cowl, Green Lantern, Secret Six, World of Krypton, Titans: Trinity, Warlord Marvel: Daredevil, Hawkeye, Marvel Zombies, Punisher, She- Hulk, War of Kings:Ascension, Ultimate Wolverine vs. Hulk Other: Eureka, Gen 13, Soulfire, Witchblade
Who Will Be the New Caped Crusader? by Pat Robinson 03.25.09
With the "death" of Batman at the hands of Darkseid at the end of "Final Crisis", Gotham City is left without a protecter. Thus begins the "Battle for the Cowl." Who is best suited or the strongest canditidate to replace Bruce Wayne as Batman? Let's look at the candidates. The most obvious choice would be Dick Grayson. The original Robin and now the present Nightwing has the history, the training, and the attitude. His years of being away from Gotham City in Bloodhavenand New York, has given him the edge he lacked when he was a sidekick. His leadership in the Teen Titans also gives him the edge in leading a Robin into adulthood. His only problem is that giant Bat-shadow he would be under. Another possible Batman is Jason Todd, the twisted second Robin who died at the hands of the Joker and was resurected during the Infinite Crisis. He would make a much hardened Crusader who is not afraid to use guns, something Bruce Wayne wouldn't do, to achieve his goals. If he became Batman he could choose Bruce Wayne's biological son Damien, raised by Ra's al Ghul Batman's sworn enemy, as his Robin. They both love to kick ass and ask questions later. Several other characters who will throw their hats or masks into the ring are Azrael, the holy avenger who at one time, took Wayne's place as Batman; Tim Drake, the present Robin; and Man-Bat, the chemically altered scientist that is more bat than man. Whoever becomes the new Batman, it will give the readers a lot of new types of stories about Gotham City to enjoy and poor Commissioner Gordon will have to learn to work with a whole new Caped Crusader.
Pat's Picks for April 2nd: DC: Man-Bat, Flash Rebith, JSA, Superman/ Batman, Strange Adventures, Teen Titans Marvel: Agents of Atlas, Amazing Spiderman, Avengers? Invaders, Iron Man, New Avengers Reunion, War of Kings, X-Men 1st Class Other: Army of Darkness, Buffy the Vampire Slayer, Witchblade, Wizard

Watchmen: the Review by Pat Robinson 03.11.09
As with most fanboys, my anticipation for "Watchmen" was higher than for the usual superhero or comic book-based movie. This was the comic that was supposedly unfilmable. Well we were wrong. It has come to the big screen pretty much intact. I believe Zack Snyder's choice to film this epic panel by panel was the only way to go. For the reported 60% of movie goers who had read the graphic novel, we saw many of our favorite scenes brought to life. The graphic novel is very deep in its backstory and history of these characters and the world they live in. This is why there is a 2 hour and 40 minute (which will be expanded to over 3 hours on the special DVD) run time. To do the story justice we needed this length to understand this world. Each character was important to the overall story. From the racist vigilante the Comedian to the crazed masked Rorschach looking for his own kind of justice, to the only character with actual "super" powers, the god-like Dr.Manhatan, these "heroes" are wonderfully flawed. This is an adult story; written and filmed for adults. The violence, sex, blood and language are a part of these characters' world. If "Dark Knight" is dark in its story, Watchmen is pitch black. There is no happy ending, but this movie makes you question the different kinds of heroes there are in the world. I recommend this movie, but be prepared for a slow steady pace of storytelling with a fair amount of flashbacks. The violent scenes, which include rape, are hard to watch, but are an important part of showing who these characters are. All in all an interesting ride which, after a few days to digest what I saw, I would like to see again.
Pat's Picks for March 19th: DC: Outsiders, Supergirl, Trinity Marvel: Amazing Spiderman, Dark Avengers, Deadpool, Moon Knight, Punisher, Squadron Supreme, Thunderbolts, Ultimate X-Men, Wolverine, X-Force Other: Fathom, Invincible, Kull, X-Files
Summer Is Near-Here Come the Movie Comics by Pat Robinson 03.03.09
IDW Comics, which is celebrating its tenth anniversary, is really in the catbird's (or maybe the Captain's) seat this year. They are putting out several comic books that tie into upcoming movies. The most popular is their prequel to the new "Star Trek" reboot. It is called "Star Trek: Countdown". It deals with the events in the present "Star Trek" timeline (post "Star Trek Nemisis") that lead old Spock to travel through time to involve himself in his younger self's carreer. Because several Next Generation characters are involved, the writers at this past weekend's Wondercon gave indications of the possibilities that they will be in the movie. In the case of the "G.I. Joe" movie, one of the actors will be writing for a comic based on his character. That would be Ray (Darth Maul) Park who will be writing about Snake Eyes. Dialogue will be easy since Snake Eyes lets his martial art abilities do all of his talking.
Pat's Picks for March 12th: DC: Action, Batman: Battle for the Cowl, Booster Gold, Green Lantern Corps, Rebels, Titans, Trinity
Comics Worth giving a Second (Or First) Look by Pat Robinson 02.25.09
Many long running titles have ups and downs based on popularity of writers or artists. So I am going to mention a few titles readers are returning to because of new storylines.
Comic Book Movies 101 by Pat Robinson 02.18.09
In a few weeks the newest movie based on comics or graphic novels will be released: Watchmen. This week I am going to recommend what to read in order to prepare yourself to understand what the heck is going on. In the case of the "Watchmen", it is a self-contained graphic novel written by Alan Moore and illustrated by Dave Gibbons. This truly reads like a novel with deeper than normal backstories on the central characters plus all the action a good comic story has. There is also a seperate animated DVD that will be released in time for the movie on March 6. It is called Watchmen: the Black Freighter. It is a story that takes place within the graphic novel and is supposed to give a real understanding of the characters. The other upcoming movie that some may need a little background is "Wolverine." Hugh Jackmen will show the whole backstory of the X-Men's most popular character. There are two graphic novels to read in preparation to see the movie..The first is "Origin" which tells the story from early childhood to pre-Wolverine. It gives a prespective of what makes Logan tick, his true age, and his relationship with Sabretooth. The other one is "Weapon X". This graphic novel tells how Wolverine, the weapon was created, how he was given the metal-laced skeleton and was brought into a secret world of government operatives. I hope both of these movies will live up to these great comic book stories.
Pat's Picks for Feb. 26th: DC: Batman: Gotham After Midnight, Green Lantern, Justice Society, Reign in Hell, Sgt. Rock, Superman, Teen Titans, Wonder Woman Marvel: Avengers Initiative, Capt, America, Fantastic Four, Hercules, Hulk, Mighty Avengers, New Avengers, Skarr, Ultimate Spiderman, X-Force Other: Conan, Dark Tower, Dynamo 5, Eureka, Savage Dragon, Spawn, Star Wars Legacy, Wizard
New Year-New York Con by Pat Robinson 02.11.09
The first big comic convention of the 2009 was held this past weekend in New York City. The New York Comic Con brings the first inklings of what to expect in the next twelve months in not only the comic book world but also movies, television, and video games. Some of the things to look foward to are: IDW will not only be celebrating their tenth anniversary by getting back to their horror roots, but will be putting out several comics that will tie into the "G.I. Joe" and "Transformer" movies. Marvel had a lot to talk about. Their projects include "Planet Skarr" where the Hulk's son comes to Earth to face off with dear old dad; Punisher will join the X-Men and Spiderman in getting the Noir treatment; Captain America's team of Brubaker and Epting will look into the early days of the Marvel heroes in "Marvels Project"; and finally the aftermath of Ultimatum will spawn some new titles. Over at the Distinguised Competition (DC) , much of the new year will have to do with the "Darkest Night" storyline that runs through not only Green Lantern, but several DC titles. Keith Giffen will take over the "Doom Patrol", Geoff Johns will resurrect "Adventure Comics", and the choosing of the new Batman will all be a part of 2009. The "Watchmen' had a pannel dicussing the movie and Joss Whedon was on hand to promote his new television project "Dollhouse". The gamers got to see new games based on Wolverine and Wanted. New York Comic Con let us know that it's going to be a good year for comic fans.
Pat's Picks for Feb 19th: DC: Brave and Bold, Justice League, Robin, Supergirl, Trinity, Vigilante Marvel: Amazing Spiderman, Dark Avengers, Ghost Rider, Moon Knight, Punisher, Ultimate Fantastic Four, Uncanny X-Men, X-Men Legacy Other: Invincible, Battlestar Galactica, Star Wars Knights of the Old Republic, World of Warcraft, X-Files
Finally The End Of the Final Crisis by Pat Robinson 02.05.09
The one question I have been asked the most in the last week since issue #7 of the DC's "Final Crisis" came out is, "What does it all mean?" Like most I shook my head and said, "Beats me." I then re-read the series and still said, "Huh?" After thinking about it and reading some online reviews, my opinion is that this was a cosmic event that should be enjoyed, which I did, and that it does change several things in the end. What I enjoyed was the use of some of DC's most obscure characters from Tawky Tawny to Anthro to Kamandi. I liked the story begun with Anthro at the beginning of time and shot to Kamandi at the end of time. The changes included most notably the death of the Martian Manhunter (who will return during "Blackest Night" in the Summer) and the "death" of Batman. Of course, Bruce is not dead, but has been displaced in time and possibly space by Darseid. Who knows how this will turn out? All in all if the "Final Crisis" was a great adventure full of cosmic battles and personal stories told in a colorful and exciting fashion and in time it will hopefully make sense.
Pat's Picks for Feb. 12th: DC: Batman, Booster Gold, Green Arrow/Black Canary, Nightwing, Rebels, Titans, Trinity Marvel: Amazing Spiderman, Amazing Spidergirl, Avengers/Invaders, Eternals, New Warriors, Thor, X-Infernus Other: Darkness, Gears of War, Gen 13, Phantom, Soulfire, Red Sonja, Walking Dead
In His Image by Pat Robinson 01.28.09
Norman Osborn, who now runs the defense systems of the Marvel Universe, has assembled his own version of Marvel's premeire superhero group: the Avengers. The "Dark Avengers" have been created to seemingly protect the post "Secret Invasion" world while in reality they will be used to covertly help other Marvel villians: Osborn has his own Hulk-like powerhouse in the Sentry; a god in Ares; and Osborn has had other characters literally take the names of the actual Avengers. Moonstone is Ms. Marvel; Bullseye is Hawkeye; Marvel Boy is now Captain Marvel; Venom is Spiderman; and the son of Wolverine will take his father's name. In order to lead this new group of "heroes", Osborn has donned a new red, white and blue tinted armour from Tony Stark's arsonel and calls himself the Iron Patriot. This new book, which is also my comic of the week, is written by the talented Brian Michael Bendis and drawn by Mike Deodato. If this is an example of what is to come during the "Dark Reign", it's going to be very interesting and exciting.
Pat's Picks for Feb. 5th: DC: Mighty, Secret Six, Terror Titans Marvel: Agents of Atlas, Astonishing Tales, Black Panther, Cable, Deadpool, Irom Man, X-Men Noir Other: Authority, The Boys, Buffy, Eureka, Farscape
Obama to the Rescue by Pat Robinson 01.21.09
On the eve of becoming President, Barack Obama took time to team with Spiderman to stop the Chameleon from becoming the Crook in Chief. This short couple of pages in the back of "Amazing Spidernan" #583 became the most sought after comic book since the Death of Superman in "Superman"# 75. People lined up across the country at comic shops or went to Ebay to purchase their own piece of history. See. Mr. Obama is already helping the economy. The other comic event is also my pick for comic book of the week: Final Crisis # 6. The DC Universe is in turmoil and Darkseid is attempting to return to power, when a hero steps up to save the day: Batman. In the course of stopping Darkseid he seemingly makes the ultimate sacrifice. The final page shows Superman carrying the scourched remains of the Caped Crusader. The belief is that this is not the end but we'll have to wait and see . Stay tuned.
Pat's Picks for Jan. 29th: DC: Batman, Final Crisis, Justice Society, Legion of Superheroes, Superman, Trinity, Wonder Woman Marvel: Avengers Inititive, Captain America, Daredevil, Hercules, Marvels Eye of the Camera, New Avegers, Nova, Skarr, X-Force Other: Dark Tower, The Stand, Savage Dragon, Wizard
We Are Legion by Pat Robinson 01.13.09
Thursday night Jan. 15th, my fanboy dream comes true. CW's "Smallville" will air an episode about my favorite superhero group: the Legion of Super-heroes. This group of superpowered teens from the 31st Century come back in time to meet and work with the young man that is the inspiration for their exsistence: Clark Kent. Lightning Lad, Cosmic Boy, and Saturn Girl will use their powers to generate lightning, manipulate magnectic fields, and use telepathy to fight side-by-side with the future Superman. In the episode Clark will get a glimpse of the impact he will have on future generations not only on Earth, but across the galaxy. This episode is penned by comic book writer Geoff Johns, who lately has been writing for Action Comics telling some of the best Superman stories in years. Complete with Legion flight rings and the evil Persuader, this really should be an episode to see. I just wish they had included that "I can eat anything" hero Matter Eater Lad from the planet Bismoll, but maybe next time. What's Good Now and Down the Road by Pat Robinson 01.07.09
Right now there are several great comics that are well-received and some that are coming that look good on paper. Some of those you can try right now include: "Locke & Key" a modern day horror story set ,where else, in a haunted house written by Stephen King's son "Kick Ass" a story that includes teen angst and incredible violence by Mark Millar and John Romitta Jr. "Captain Britain and MI:13" written by one of the writers on the new Dr. Who series, tells of Captain Britain's exploits with other British heroes in their battle against magical forces "Tiny Titans" a young adult version of the "Teen Titans" when the characters were small children "All-Star Superman" a classic 1960's style adventure that reminds us of the amazing wonder of Superman told by Grant Morrison and drawn by Frank Quitely
The future holds promise for several projects: Neil (Sandman) Gaimen's "What Ever Happened to the Caped Crusader" the final Bruce Wayne Batman story; "Dark Avengers" a new team put together by Norman Osborn; and the "Black Lantern" storyline where the dead will rise to do evil to the DC universe. The new book of the week is "Incognito" by Ed Brubaker and Sean Phillips of "Criminal" fame. It's a new story about another bad guy and his point of view in a great pulp style of storytelling.
Pat's Picks for Jan.15th: DC: Batman Confidential, Booster Gold, Final Crisis, Green Arrow/ Black Canary, Nightwing, Titans, Trinity Marvel: Amazing Spidergirl, Amazing Spiderman, Capt. Britain, Deadpool, Punisher War Zone, X-Men/ Spiderman Other: Anita Blake, Fables, Gen 13, Invinicible, Solomon Kane, Witchblade
A Year to Be Proud Of by Pat Robinson 12.31.08
2008 will be remembered as the year comics took a firm hold in mainstream culture. The astonishing sucess of the "Dark Knight" and "Iron Man" movies further opened the door for more people to either read comics for the first time or those who had left, to return. And there was a lot to enjoy. The universe spanning events included Marvel's "Secret Invasion" and DC's "Final Crisis", but the real gems are in the regular monthly titles. Marvel stepped up to the plate with "Captain America" which continues the story of the post Steve Roger's era, "Daredevil", one of the best gritty crime comics today. Both titles are written by the great Ed Brubaker. Other enjoyable titles include "Astonishing X-Men", "New Avengers", "Hercules", and "Thor. DC brought us "Batman RIP", the story of the end of Batman as we know it; "Green Lantern Corps" which shows the aftermath of the dynamic "Sinestro Corps War"; "Justice Society" which saw the coming of the "Kingdom Comes" Superman. All of these titles tie in with the continuing "Final Crisis". DC also saw new interest shown in an older book. More copies of the "Watchmen" graphic novel have sold this year than in the past ten. All because of the movie trailer that is now showing in the theatres. 2008 also saw the passing of two greats in the comic industry. Steve Gerber who brought the world the pop icon "Howard the Duck" and the gifted artist Michael Turner. They were great and will be missed. 2009 will see more movies based on comics: "Watchmen (if Warner and Fox can make a fast agreement in court), "Wolverine", "G.I. Joe", and "Kick Ass". The comics will see a new Batman, evil at work in Marvel's "Dark Reign" and DC's "Faces of Evil" and the "Black Lanterns". Sounds like another great year.
Pat's Picks for Jan. 8th: DC: Black Lightning Year 1, Haunted Tank, Sandman Dream Hunters, Terror Titans, Trinity Marvel: Amazing Spiderman, Cable, Eternals, Iron Man, Marvel Zombies, Punisher, Sub Mariner, X-Men Noir Other: Authority, the Boys, Buffy, Walking Dead
What to Get your Superheroes for Christmas by Pat Robinson 12.18.08
In order to help you find the right gift for your comic reading friends or family members, Santa Pat would like to offer a few suggestions. For the young comic reader, any comics based on cartoon shows or video games is a good place to start. Titles like "Sonic the Hedge Hog", "Superfriends", "Cartoon Network Block Party", and "Marvel Adventures" are all good ideas. If they are early teens and enjoy drawing, get them "Gon" about a small dinosaur and his adventures in the animal kingdom and "Owley" about a young owl and his forest friends. For teens and adults, graphic novels are the way to go. These compilations of monthly comic stories are always great stocking stuffers. Some great ones in the superhero genre are "Captain Anerica " by Ed Brubaker, which tells the entire story leading to the death of Steve Rogers; "The Killing Joke" which is considered the best Joker story ever told and "Watchmen" the story that next year's blockbuster movie is taken from. For those that like to read about the mystical side of the comic world, the "Sandman" series, which is celebrating its 20th anniversary, about Sandman, his sister Death and their dysfunctional family is for them. Along with the massive amounts of reading material, there is also T-Shirts , action figuires and posters. Hopefully your Christmas will find your stockings full of all kind of comic book goodies.

The Secret Invasion Was Just the Beginning by Pat Robinson 12.11.08
Marvel's big event, the "Secret Invasion", is over, but this is where the real event begins:"Dark Reign". The aftermath of the Skrull Invasion has left the Marvel Universe in shambles. The captured heroes have been returned, but the damage by the Skrull doubles has been widespread. The Earth's defenses have all but been desroyed; the heroes' trust for each other is at an all-time low; Tony Stark's (and Iron Man's) reputation is gone;and the Wasp is dead. "Secret Invasion" was a great idea of long-term invasion from within over a period of several years, but it was not always well-executed. There was too much talk at times and not enough action or story advancement, but in the end, it delivered. When the dust cleared, it was the former Green Goblin Norman Osborn who saved the day. His Thunderbolt organization succeeded while SHIELD and Stark Industies were in disaray. As with any great story, the last page revealed the greatest twist of all: the Earth's savior is in cahoots with some of Marvel's greatest villians and dark characters in some sort of evil illuminati. This new group who will seek to control the world as any good villians would ,include The Hood, Namor, Dr. Doom, Loki , and Emma Frost. I hope it will be as good as it appears.
Pat's Picks for Dec. 18th: DC: Brave and Bold, DCU Holiday Special 2008, Robin, Supergirl, Terra Marvel: Amazing Spiderman, Avengers Inititive, Deadpool, Ghost Rider, Iron Man, Moon Knight, New Exiles, Punisher, Uncanny X-Men Other: Black Terror, Buffy, Conan, X-Files
Batman RIP??? by Pat Robinson 12.04.08
This week one mystery ended and a new one began. Would DC Comics seemingly kill off the Dark Knight : yes and who will be the next Caped Crusader? Most don't believe Bruce Wayne is dead . The guess is he will take on a new role in the post Final Crisis world. The interesting part is who will take on the mantle of Batman. The money is on Nightwing. Dick Grayson ,the original Robin, has trained all his life to take over in the event of Bruce Wayne's untimely death, but that's too easy. Others in contention for the "Battle for the Cowl" (the title of the upcoming story) are the present Robin (Tim Drake), the past Robin Jason Todd, who until recently was dead and sane (not necessarily in that order) and a new contender Batman's son Damien. Damien may be young but he has been trained all his life to fight by his mother Talia and Grandpa Ra's al Ghul. Before we find out who will strap on the utility belt, DC is going to give old Bats a big sendoff with stories by long time Batman writer Denny O'Neil and fantasy writer and creator of the "Sandman" series Neil Gaimen. We'll miss you Bruce, but we know it won't be long before you're a part of another great story.
Pat's Picks for Dec. 11: DC: Action, Booster Gold, Detective, Final Crisis, Green Lantern Corps, Nightwing, Secret Six , Superman / Batman, Titans Marvel: Amazing Spidergirl, Astonishing X-Men: Ghost Boxes, Civil War House of M, Marvels Eye of the Camera, Secret Invasion Dark Reign, What If, X-Men/ Spiderman Others: Army of Darkness , Darkness , Fathom , Gen 13
What If I Tell You an Imaginary Story about an Elseworld by Pat Robinson 11.25.08
As the end of the year approaches, Marvel brings its fans a treat: a series of "What If" stories. These are stories where a certain event from comic history is told from a point of view of what if this happened instead of what originally happened and what would be the new aftermath. One of the most famous was "What If Wolverine Killed the Hulk" during their first meeting. DC preceded Marvel in this style of storytelling with the "Imaginary Stories". In the 1960's, such stories were told about Superman's life as Lois Lane or Lana Lang's husband, or if Lex Luthor killed Superman. All of these stories were fun because they could do many of the things fans wanted to see outside regular continuity. In later years these stories morphed into what DC called "Elseworld" stories. These were a little more involved. They would tell about characters such as Superman lived in a world where he was raised in Russia or Batman lived in a world where vampires ruled. What is interesting is with the aftermath of the 52 story, these elseworlds are now part of the DC universe. It's funny to think of talking about imaginary stories about imaginary stories, but if told well can be a lot of fun.
Pat's Picks for Dec. 5: DC: Batman RIP, Justice Society, Sandman, Trinity Marvel: Amazing Spiderman, Cable, Eternals, Marvel Zombies, New Avengers, Secret Invasion, X-Men Noir Other: Hellboy
Bits and Pieces from the World of Comics by Pat Robinson 11.20.08
Some of the buzz in the comic world revolves around up coming superhero movies and cartoons. The next big movies based on a comic are Frank Miller's "The Spirit" based on Will Eisner's classic stories and the "Punisher", Marvel's third try at this potential franchise. Both will hit the theatres in December. Next year, Mark Millar's "Kick Ass' will show how kids with no super powers can still, well, kick ass and Hugh Jackman will return in "Wolverine" to show how he got those shiney claws. Next summer, production on "Iron Man 2" and "Thor" should get under way followed by "Captain America" and the "Avengers". DC has fast-tracked a "Green Lantern" project and I'm sure they are pondering how to squeeze another 500 million out of the Batman franchise. On the small screen, "Batman: the Brave and Bold" has debuted on the Cartoon Network and next spring, "Wolverine and the X-Men " will make their way to Nick Toons. On the DVD front, the complete "Batman the Animated Series" is now available just in time for holiday shopping. Next year be on the lookout for several DVD animated movies: "Wonder Woman", "Hulk vs. Thor" and "Hulk vs. Wolverine". Lots of fun on the horizon.

Thank You for Your Service by Pat Robinson 11.12.08
On this Veteran's Day week, I thought it would be good to remember and remind of the importance of the "war" comics. Since the beginning of the the comic book, men going off to war has been an important part of the stories told. Even before the U.S was in WWII, comic characters like Captain America, the original Human Torch, and the Submariner were facing off against Hitler and the Nazis. In the 1950's, the military comics were headlined by DC's Sgt. Rock. The brave men of Easy Co. fought for freedom alongside the Haunted Tank and the Blackhawks. Over at Marvel, Sgt. Nick Fury and his Howling Comandos were fighting the good fight. The Vietmam War was chronicled in a very real month by month fashion in the 1980's in "The Nam" comic book. In recent years there have been two stand-out books concerning the fight in Iraq. The first is an adult story called "Army @ Love" and the other is a story of how the people and the country have been affected called "The Pride of Bagdad." These comics remind us that the real heroes are not the guys who can fly and wear strange costumes but are our fathers, brothers, sisters and moms. I hope we never forget.
Pat's Picks for Nov. 20: DC: Batgirl, Batman and the Outsiders, Brave and Bold, Flash, Robin, Supergirl, Trinity Marvel: Amazing Spiderman, Avengers/ Invaders, Deadpool, Fantastic Four, Moon Knight, Punisher, Ultimate Fantastic Four, Young X-Men Other: Conan, Dynamo 5, Goon, Invincible, Spawn, X-Files
Bad to the Bone by Pat Robinson 11.05.08
As both Marvel and DC appear to be headed toward a time where each universe will be ruled by the bad guys, I thought it would be good time to highlight some of the bad boys and girls. Without a doubt the number one bad guy (because a certain record-breaking movie) is the Joker. Batman's longest running adversary (1st appearance in Batman #1) is, as the line from the movie says, someone who just likes to watch the world burn. Marvel's top crazed baddie is Spiderman's villian the Green Goblin. His crazy actions,at least early on, are chemically induced but lately it's more of a personality problem. Each universe has what I call the the villian who sees himself as the good guy or the savior. At DC it's Lex Luthor. He went from the evil scientist in the early Superman comics to the rich, powerful business man who believes Superman is not only a threat to his power but an alien who should not be allowed to roam free. Marvel's evil savior is Dr. Doom. Victor von Doom uses his above-average intelect and power as the leader of the country of Latveria to try and bring the world under his influence thinking he can bring order with himself as king. Fortunately, the Fantastic Four keeps him from suceeding. As bad girls go, DC and Marvel each have female burglars who not only steal items, but the hearts of there respective heroes. At DC it's Catwoman who works with and against Batman. Over at Marvel, the Black Cat does the same with Spiderman. Finally, each comic universe has a team of bad guys who are used to doing some good in the world by getting their hands dirty where the usual heroes can't. In DC it is a one-time government agency called the Suicide Squad. In order to stay out of prison, a revolving group of villians do the government's dirty work to keep chaos from running amok. Marvel counters with the Thunderbolts. This group, who has recently included the Green Goblin and Venom, take care of unruly troublemakers and situations usually for their own purposes and sometimes for the greater good. It's sometimes good to be bad.
Pat's Picks for Nov. 13th: DC: Action, Batman: Cacopony, Booster Gold, Detective RIP, Green Lantern Corps, Nightwing RIP, Titans Marvel: Spidergirl, Amazing Spiderman, Dark Tower, New Exiles, The Stand, Wolverine Other: Broken Trinity, Darkness, Gears of War, Gen 13, Dresden Files, Savage Dragon, Walking Dead
The Death of Pa Kent by Pat Robinson 10.29.08
With the so-called deaths of several comic heroes over the last couple of years (Captain America, Martian Manhunter, even Superman), the passing of Pa Kent doesn't seem to register as much with fans but I think it stands as an important milestone in comics. The adoptive father of the world's greatest hero met his end in "Action "# 870 saving his dear wife Martha from an attack by the computerized villian Braniac. After they both were seemingly safe, Jonathan Kent died from a heart attack. This is the same way previous Pas had died from the Superman TV series with George Reeves to Glen Ford in the first Superman movie to Smallville's John Schnider. Pa Kent has always been a favorite of mine because this simple, common farmer helped mold the character of the most powerful man in the world. I hope the writers of the Superman titles will include Clark's dealing with his father's death in the upcoming issues. Goodbye Jonathan Kent.

Barack-el, Son of Krypton and Other Tales in the Comic World by Pat Robinson 10.23.08
In the last few weeks we have found out that not only does Barack Obama have his own comic book , but according to a speech he made, he was sent from Krypton to save us all. Does that make George Bush Lex Luthor? In other comic-related news, Don Cheedle has suposedly been chosen to replace Terrence Howard as James Rhodes in Iron Man 2. If you haven't been watching "Smallville", this week you may want to tune in to see the beginning of a story about their version of "Doomsday", the character that killed Superman years ago . Also the Legion of Superheroes episode is not too far off. As DC and Marvel's big stories wind down, it appears from reports of upcoming issues that darker times are ahead for both companies' characters. The villians in DC will be taking over the regular titles and Marvel is so secretive with their plans that they will not reveal story content until the last minute. On Nov. 14th, "Batman and the Brave and the Bold" will premeire on the Cartoon Network. This new animated series will team Batman up with DC 's other heroes in weekly adventures. Stay tuned here for more goings on in the comic book world.

Ed Brubaker- Writer for the Masses by Pat Robinson 10.14.08
This week I would like to highlight acclaimed comic book writer Ed Brubaker. If Mr. Brubaker was not making a living writing a variety comic book titles, he would be writing detective novels or a TV series like CSI. His style of writing is loved by mystery or espionage readers and by comic book readers alike. Since his early days writing "Scene of the Crime" about a slacker detective to now writing about the Caped Crusader and Cap, he brings a love of story-telling. Some of his past triumphs include, "Batman" (2001-2003), Catwoman story with artist Darwyn Cooke (JLA New Frontier),and Gotham Central (about the Gotham City Police) with writer Greg Rucka. These days he writes "Captain America" which he single-handily revived. His Winter Soldier storyline reminded many of "The Manchurian Candidate" and it led to the death of Steve Rogers, the original Star Spangled Avenger. Brubaker also writes "Daredevil" and "Criminal". Criminal is a gritty story of ground level crime families and revenge. All of these stories show great detective work or intrigue. I hope everyone will try one of Ed Brubaker's many award-winning comics; you will not be disappointed.
Pat's Picks for Oct. 23: DC: Final Crisis, Final Crisis- Submit, Superman New Krypton, Tangent Superman's Reign, Trinity, Unknown Soldier Marvel: Amazing Spiderman, Captain America, Daredevil, Hulk, New Avengers, Secret Invasion, Ultimate Spiderman, X- Factor, X-Men Other: Battlestar Gallactica, Spawn, Wildcats, World of Warcraft
Comics You Should Be Reading by Pat Robinson 10.08.08
As the summer ends with all the big (sometimes too big) events winding down, it's time to talk about some of the titles that are worth taking a look at. First, two titles that are mainsream characters and are written by the same writer are "Captain America" and "Daredevil". Ed Brubaker has taken two of Marvel Comics' longer running titles and breathed new life into them. Captain America's story's right out of the international headlines and Daredevil's gritty crime stories are gripping and interesting. Another Marvel hero who has been revitalized is "Thor". J. Michael Straczynski (Babylon 5) has brought the Thunder God back to his action packed best with stories of how such a mythical character fits into today's world. Over at DC, "Action Comics" has been on fire. Geoff Johns has brought new excitment to this Superman title with his story concerning the return of Braniac. It leads into a new storyline where Earth will have a new wave of illegal aliens: Kryptonians. Other titles to look out for include "Star Wars The Clone Wars", "Dr. Who", "The Boys", "Terror Titans", "Kick Ass" , and "Secret Six". All of these books and many more are available at your local comic store.
Pat's Picks for Oct. 16: DC: Batgirl, Cyborg, Flash, Final Crisis: Legion of 3 Worlds, Final Crisis: Rogue's Revenge, Robin Marvel: Amazing Spiderman, Ghost Rider, Iron Man, Mighty Avengers, Uncanny X-Men, Young X- Men Other: Armory Wars, Conan, Darkness, Dynamo 5, PVP
Real World Comics by Pat Robinson 10.01.08
In the next few weeks, both John McCain and Barack Obama will be immortalized in the true American art of the comic book. Their life stories will be told in the same manner as Superman or Spiderman. IDW Publishing has put a lot of work into these issues including covers by artist J. Scott Campbell. They are not the first real people to be given the comic book treatment. Years ago, John F. Kennedy was part of a Superman story concerning the President's desire to get American children in shape.(Superman #168) Years later, Marvel presented a story about Saint Francis (Francis, Brother of the Universe) which led to the comic about the life of Pope John Paul II. All of these books were serious adaptations of these historical figuires. In the last few years , the Vietnam War was depicted in "Nam" by Marvel and the Iraq conflict was shown in the "Pride of Bagdad." Even further back, the acclaimed graphic novel "Maus" showed what life was like in the German concentration camps. I love the fantasy and action of a good superhero comic, but these type of real life stories in comic form are very special.
Pat's Picks for Oct.9: DC: Action, Batman Confidential, Detective RIP, Final Crisis Revelations, Green Lantern, Green Lantern Corps, Secret Six, Trinity, Wonder Woman Marvel: Spidergirl, Avengers/ Invaders, Deadpool, Iron Man, Marvel Zombies, Secret Invasion Inhumans, X-Men Original Sin Other: Dark Tower, Drafted, Enders Game, Gears of War, Invincible, Stand, Walking Dead
You Don't Have to Have a $200 Million Budget to be Great by Pat Robinson 09.24.08
After a summer full of big comic book movies, Hulk, Iron Man and that masked vigilante in Gotham City, other not-so-well known projects are on the horizon. First, the biggest one that has captured the public's interest is "Watchmen". The movie trailer alone has increased the sale of the Alan Moore graphic novel. It is a big budget movie in production costs, but the director is using good actors not famous ones. Next is "Astro Boy". This over fifty-year-old manga and anime legend will have a new big screen animated treatment. Freddy Highmore of "Willy Wonka" will voice the title character. Mark Millar's ultra popular and ultra violent comic "Kick- Ass" is in production for a 2009 release .This tale is about a non-super powered teen who wants to be a hero in a violent world. Nick Cage is part of this Matthew Vaughn (Stardust ) production. The pre-production wheels are rolling for DC's Vertigo title "Y the Last Man" to go before the cameras. This is the tale of one man, one monkey, and millions women left on Earth after all the other males die. It may be a trilogy to tell the whole story. These are just a few of the many comic-related projects under contact, many more will surely follow.
Pat's Picks for Oct. 2: DC: Batman RIP, DC Decisions, JLA, Nightwing RIP, Supergirl, Terror Titans, Trinity Marvel: Cable, Eternals, New Exiles, Punisher War Journal, Submariner Other: Anita Blake, Authority, Boys, Invincible, Witchblade
Holy F*** Batman by Pat Robinson 09.16.08
Well, the Caped Crusader has made the news once again. Not for his box office numbers or saving Gotham City, but for a comic full of words that the Riddler probably doesn't even know. Frank Miller's "All Star Batman #10" was supposed to be released nationwide last week with all the profanity that Miller's Batman constantly uses but with black lines covering the worst words. Unfortunately, the ink used to cover the words was not dark enough and the words showed in all their profane glory. We dealers were informed that we would not receive this book as it would be destoyed and replaced in a couple of weeks with the corrected version. Not all of them were stopped before shipping and some dealers received them and thus began an EBAY extravaganza. So far over a thousand copies have been placed on the online flea market and I have seen some of them sell for as much as $250.00. If no more than a few thousand made it into circulation, this will be to some degree a true collector's item. I just hope this doesn't start a trend to once again to push the envelope to create collector fever. Just give the public well written stories (with hopefully less adult dialogue) with good art work, and we'll keep you in business.
Pat's Picks for Sept. 25: DC: Reign in Hell , Superman , Superman/Batman , Trinity Marvel: Avengers Inititive, Black Panther, Captain America, Daredevil, Fantastic Four, Hulk, New Avengers, Ultimate Spiderman, X-Force, X-Men Other: Aspen Showcase, Flash Gordon, Hellboy, Powers, Spawn, Withblade, Wizard
Well, I'll Be a Monkey's Uncle by Pat Robinson 09.10.08
Marvel Comics has just about hit rock bottom. This month they introduced a mini series called "Marvel Apes". An alternate reality where the Marvel superheroes are various types of monkeys. A couple of years ago DC did a similar story where Gorilla Grodd turned a lot of heroes into apes and the only thing that made this a little easier to take is that they didn't devote a title to this concept. If Marvel wants to appeal to a younger crowd, as I think they should, I hope they will concentrate more on the Marvel Adventures line and their comic adaptations of literature classics. Marvel, stick to the zombies for your alternate versions of your heroes and leave the animal kingdom alone. From time to time I'm going to try to highlight writers who you should be reading. This week is Gail Simone. Ms. Simone is most notably known of late for her great work on "Wonder Woman". Her grasp for this character's history and how to tie this into her present is remarkable. She is also the writer on the new "Secret Six" title for DC. Her dialogue in the first issue.between the disenfranchised villians trying to decide whether to become "good guys" is priceless. Other books she has written include "Action", "Legion"and "Welcome to Tranquility." Give her a shot, you won't be disappointed.
Pat's Picks for Sept. 18: DC: Batgirl, Brave and Bold, Flash, Robin, Titans, Trinity Marvel: Amazing Spiderman, Hercules, Mighty Avengers, Moon Kinght, Punisher, Uncanny X-Men, X-Factor Other: Air, Broken Trinity, Conan, Fathom
The Do's and Don'ts of the Telling a Comic Epic by Pat Robinson 09.04.08
Ever since "The Crisis on Infinite Earths" was released by DC over twenty years ago, the comic companies have tried to suck comic readers and dealers into buying comics we normally wouldn't. I admit that I carried every book that tied into the original Crisis in equal numbers to the actual series thinking everyone would want every part of the story no matter how small. Boy was I wrong. I still have boxes of those useless crossovers in storage. Every few years, each comic company tries the formula of a good or even great 6 or 7 issue story with so many crossovers into regular monthly titles that it will make your head hurt. Comic customers and dealers have learned their lessons. It appears DC has learned, too. The last few years they produced several interesting comic book events: "Identity Crisis", "Infinite Crisis" and presently "Final Crisis". None had massive crossovers. The newest "Crisis" does have several offshoot books that are very important parts of the story, but the company has kept the story from being a part of every existing title. "Rogue's Revenge" which deals with the Flash's villians, "Revelations" which shows the Spectre looking to deal out some retribution, and "Legion of Three Worlds" which shows the battle for the future between Superman and Superboy Prime with the Legion of Superheroes for good measure are all important, interesting parts of the bigger story, but the reader does not feel he or she has to read them all to get the whole story. They are like adding a side dish to the main course. Unfortunately, Marvel has yet to learn this lesson. The "Secret Invasion" which deals with the Skrull infiltration of Earth not only has the main story, but the list of crossovers include almost every regular monthly title. This is way too much. I have seen customers shy away from this story because it's just too big. They are just waiting for it to end to see if there are any repecussions. While, DC has customers on the edge of their seats with a tight fast-paced story. I hope large stories will become less the norm, and the epic stories will be within many of the regular titles. Good examples of this are "The Sinestro War" in Green Lantern; Spiderman's " One More Day", and Captain America's Winter Soldier storyline. Here endth the lesson.
Pat's Picks for Sept 11: DC: All Star Batman, Booster Gold, Final Crisis: Revelations, Green Lantern Corps, Trinity, Wonder Woman Marvel: Spidergirl, Amazing Spiderman, Civil War House of M, Deadpool, New Exiles, Secret Invasion, Ultimate Origins Other: Darkness, Gen 13, Goon, Invincible
Man of Few Words by Pat Robinson 08.28.08
This week there is nothing going on in the comic world that I can find to talk about. The only suggestion I have for this Labor Day Weekend is: #1 Go to Dragoncon in Atlanta and see great guests, great costumes, and more fans than the Fire Marshall can shake a hose at. # 2 Go see Dark Knight one more time so we can move it past the record earnings of the that big boat movie. #3 go to your local comic book shop and ask the big guy behind the counter what's good to read. See you next week.
Pat's Picks for Sept 5th: DC: Detective RIP, Green Lantern, Nightwing, Secret Six, Supergirl, Titans, Trinity Marvel: Amazing Spiderman, Dark Tower, Eternals, Invincible Iron Man, Submariner, Venom, X-Men Manifest Destiny Other: Authority, Buffy, Dynamo 5, Spawn, Witchblade
From the Screen to the Page, instead of the Other Way Around by Pat Robinson 08.21.08
Even though it not a new thing, the last few years have seen an increase of regular monthly comic books based on television series or movies. It has opened the door to a lot of new readers who have never read a comic. I just wanted to talk on some of the more sucessful ones. The first time there was a real attempt to bring tv shows to the comics was in the 1960's from a great comic company called Gold Key. Gold Key produced comic books for such iconic shows as "Dark Shadows", "Lost in Space" (under the title of "Space Family Robinson"), "Star Trek", "Voyage to the Bottom of the Sea", and "Twilight Zone". The best part of these books was that the stories were as good or better than the scripts for the shows themselves; plus the art was top of the line. In the 1970's and 1980's, Marvel and DC each took on a franchise to produce into comic form. Marvel starting to publish comics based on "Star Wars" and DC took over "Star Trek" and all its incarnations. Again, both were top-notch productions. In the 1990's there was a new kid on the block and they took this idea to new heights. Dark Horse comics became a licensing machine. They not only took over "Star Wars" but they added "Aliens", "Predator", "Buffy the Vampire Slayer", "Army of Darkness", "Godzilla", "the Incredibles","Indiana Jones", "Serenity"," and "Xena". These days some of the even smaller companies option television shows. IDW has comics based on "Ghost Whisperer", "Doctor Who", "Star Trek", and "Angel". The best part for "Buffy" and "Angel" fans is that their creator Joss Whedon has been writing them himself as continuations of the series. All of these comics have had pretty good followings and are a sure bet to be sucessful. I guess Oprah will be the next to jump on the bandwagon.

Here's Where We Are ...So Far by Pat Robinson 08.14.08
With so many on going galactic, earth-shattering, life changing storylines going on, I thought it might be a help to let you know what you might want to catch up on. In DC's "Infinite Crisis", the Martian Manhunter has met a violent end; Barry Allen (Flash) has returned from the great beyond to a very doubtful present in the future (huh?), Lois Lane is near death from the explosion at the Daily Planet, Hal Jordan ( Green Lantern) is under arrest by the other Lanterns, and the villians of the DC universe are running over all the heroes. In Marvel's "Secret Invasion", the characters we now know are invading Skrulls are Jarvis (Avenger's butler), Hank Pym (Ant Man), Elektra, Blackbolt, Dum Dum Dugan of S.H.I.E.L.D, Captain Marvel, and others we're not quite sure of. These Skrulls have banished the Fantastic Four's HQ to the Negative Zone, captured Reed Richards, destroyed Earth's defenses in space, and disabled Iron Man. Marvel's "Avengers/Invaders" has brought the Invaders of the 1940's foward to present day. Since they believe this to be some sort of Nazi trick, the Invaders are at odds with their modern day counterparts. Invader Namor has overthrown modern Namor and is rallying the people of Atlantis to attack the surface world, Iron Man is having to deal with coming face to face with his now dead friend Steve Rogers (Captain America),and we know soon old Cap and new Cap (Bucky) will have to meet. Finally, in Batman RIP, we are wittnessing the final days of Bruce Wayne's time as the Caped Crusader. We are also watching for the coming power struggle between Nightwing, Robin, Jason Todd, and Bruce's own son to decide who will take his place. All of these books are great and we're just scratching the surface as what happens next.
Pat's Picks for August 21st: DC: Air, Batgirl, Flash, JLA, Robin, Superman/Batman Marvel: Amazing Spiderman, Captain America, Hercules, Iron Man, Moon Knight, Punisher, Ultimate Fantastic Four Other: Darkness, Dynamo 5, Witchblade, World of Warcraft, Voltron
There's So Many... Where Do I Begin? by Pat Robinson 08.07.08
Since Bruce Wayne is on his way to sinking Titanic and Comic Con is done, I thought I would help those who would like to "get their comic book geek on" choose what books to start with. The most requested book is the "Watchmen " graphic novel, with a new interest in many after seeing the movie preview. It was picked as one of the top 100 novels of the 20th century by Time magazine. This is perfect for those who want a deep character study. The heroes of this book are flawed and interesting. Other thought-provoking stories include "V for Vendetta", "History of Violence", and "Maus". If you like dark fantasy, "Sandman" fits the bill. Neil Gaiman writes about the dysfuntional family that includes Sandman and his sister Death. Included in the mystical realm of comics are "Hellblazer", "Fables","Preacher", and "Anita Blake". The science-fiction crowd would love "Y the Last Man". A story about one man, his monkey, and millions of women left on the Planet Earth. If you like that you might also like "Adam Strange" which is a more family-friendly space adventure. Zombie lovers have to get "The Walking Dead"; gamers would like "Knights of the Dinner Table"; vigilantes wanting to deal out justice have to follow "Punisher"; Cowboys and girls can saddle up with "Jonah Hex", "Zorro" or "The Lone Ranger " and WWII fans need to add "Sgt. Rock", "Sgt. Fury" or "Unknown Soldier" to their duffel bag; parents looking for something for their young ones can't go wrong with "Archie", "Power Pack", "Owly"or "Gon". Of course those who would like to read about old fashioned spandex wearing super heroes can pick from hundreds between "Ant Man' and "Zantanna". I hope everyone will try to find something to enjoy.

125,000 People Can't Be Wrong by Pat Robinson 07.31.08
Once again the famous, infamous, well-costumed, and the plain folk all migrated to San Diego to enjoy Comic- Con. This is the place to promote your newest movie, comic, or just yourself (right Bruce Campbell?). This year was no different: Hugh Jackman was there with footage from the new Wolverine movie; the cast of Watchmen talked about the most-anticipated comic book adaptation; the thousands of fans were there dressed as their favorite heroes and heroines; even Paris Hilton was there to promote a new indy film. Some of the comic book highlights included: Neil Gaiman, the man responsible for Sandman, will be writing Batman early next year; the Caped Crusader will also have a mini-series penned by Kevin Smith (Silent Bob); Geoff Johns will introduce the Legion of Superheroes into the continuity of Smallville; Mike Grell will bring his character Warlord back for a new series. Over at Marvel, bossman Joe Quesada once again told curious fans that Captain America is still dead; Mark Millar will return to Marvel's ultimate universe to make some changes; the Secret Invasion was promised not to disappoint (we'll see). Larry Hama will return to write G.I. Joe for IDW early next year, just in time for the movie. Samuel L. Jackson was on hand to promote the Frank Miller directed movie adaptation of Will Eisner's The Spirit. All in all , another year full of anticipation for upcoming projects and many scantily clad women. Next up, Dragon Con.
Pat's Picks for August 7: DC: Detective RIP, Final Crisis, Infinity Inc., Nightwing RIP , Supergirl Marvel: Cable, Eternals, Hulk, Iron Man, New Exiles, NYX, Ultimate Origins Other: Armory Wars, Authority, Boys, Fathom, Red Sonja, Sword, Twelve, Walking Dead
And the Winner Is.... by Pat Robinson 07.24.08
Well, this has been the best summer movie season for comic book fans ever. A variety of well known characters and some lesser known do-gooders were spot-lighted in theatres. All had their moment in the sun and on the talk shows. I am going to give my opinion on how they did. Wanted, based on a graphic novel by Mark Millar and J.G. Jones: This Angelina Jolie vehicle was full of action and special effects-driven stunts. It deviated greatly from the graphic novel's story about a world run by costumed super villians but it still kept the core part of the story. A young paper pusher finds out he has inherited his father's abilities using fire arms and is put to the test fighting against those who he thought were his friends but were the enemy. A fun romp. Grade C+ Incredible Hulk: This new reboot of a favorite of comic and tv fans was more satisfying than Ang Lee's version from several years ago. Ed Norton captured the lonliness of Bruce Banner and William Hurt really portrayed an obsessive Thunderbolt Ross. The Hulk's appearance and the action scenes were more like that of the comic book. Grade B Iron Man: Robert Downey Jr. embodied all that is Tony Stark. This slick, fun, explosive adaptation of yet another Stan Lee product was right on target. The humor, the action, the story all were perfect for this Jon Faverau production. Grade A Hellboy 2: First we had Big Green now we have Big Red. This super hero / fantasy movie is beautiful to look at. The myriad of creatures, good and bad, was mind boggling. The heroics and the romance was right at home in this second outing for our favorite horned, cat-loving hero. Also to see our star singing a duet with Abe Sapien of a Barry Manilow song was worth the price of admission. Grade B+ Finally, the hype has become real, The Dark Knight: This second Batman adaptation by director Chris Nolan enters into history as the greatest comic book movie to date. This was an event full of the darkness this group of characters deserves. Batman/Bruce Wayne, Joker, Harvey Dent/ Two Face, Alfred, Jim Gordon and Rachel were all great, fleshed-out characters and the action and tension were non-stop.I hope everyone sees this one twice to get the full impact. Grade A++++++++++. This has been a fun summer and next year we can look foward to Wolverine and Watchmen. I can't wait.
Pat's Picks for July 31: DC: Batman- Deathmask, Green Lantern, Joker Asylum: Two Face, Superman/ Batman, Teen Titans Marvel: Black Panther, Ms. Marvel, Skarr, Son of Hulk, Thor, Wolverine, Wolverine: Origins Other: Dynamo 5, Sword, Wizard
No Laughing Matter by Pat Robinson 07.17.08
This weekend the movie of the summer will premiere: "The Dark Knight." Heath Ledger will play Batman's greatest enemy, the Joker, in of one of his final performances. The casual fan may only know of the Clown Prince of Crime from Jack Nicholson's movie version, Cesear Romero's campy TV version, or even the cartoon version voiced by Mark Hamill, but these are not true to the Joker's comic book history. If you really want an insight to the demented mind of the Joker, you must look into some of his most famous comic book stories. It all begins in Batman #1 (1940) where the Joker is introduced as a mass murderer. For years, comic fans never knew the background of the Joker until Detective #168(1951) where we find out how he got those striking features of pale white skin and green hair. The Clown Prince was a criminal known as the Red Hood and in his attempt to escape capture from the Caped Crusader, he fell in a vat of chemicals which changed him forever. In the 1980's, the Joker was redefined as a truly crazy, dangerouus nut-case. In Frank Miller's "The Dark Knight Returns", future Joker's years of therapy doesn't stop him from continued mass murder. The defining story in the Joker's career is "The Killing Joke." In this pivitol tale, he shoots Barbara Gordon (Batgirl) paralizing her forever. He also was the murderer of Jason Todd (Robin) in "A Death in the Family." In recent years, one more great Joker story was released which gave an early insight into what makes the criminal tick, "The Man Who Laughs." Word from movie critics is that this version of the Joker by Mr. Ledger is Oscar-worthy. If so, it will add to the legacy of this great comic book villian.

Hancock Was Not the First.. by Pat Robinson 07.10.08
Will Smith's super-hero movie,"Hancock", was #1 this past weekend, which has caused some of my customers to ask if he has his own comic. No, but there are a number of black comic book heroes. I will go down my list of who I think are some of the best:
#1 Luke Cage, a product of the 1970's blacksploitation movement in movies, has hard as steel skin and great strength. He was a Hero for Hire. #2 Storm, a leader among the mutant team X-Men, has the power to control the weather. #3. War Machine, James Rhodes, is a confidant and aide to Iron Man (Tony Stark) and uses a similar armor to his boss to back him up in his many battles. #4 John Stewart, a member of Earth's intergalactic protectors the Green Lanterns, uses his strong will and power ring to fight against bad guys from stars. #5. Falcon, who works closely with Captain America, uses his abilities to fly and sense things through birds in close proximity to fight alongside the superhero group the Avengers. #6 Black Panther, T'challa ruler of the African nation of Wakanda, uses his natural athletic and leadership abilities to protect his people and country. #7 Cyborg, Victor Stone, a member of the 1980's version of the Teen Titans, has robotic implants in his eye and limbs which he uses to protect those in need. #8 Steel, John Henry Irons, is a weapons designer, has a suit of armor and a mighty hammer to fight alongside his hero Superman. #9. Spawn, Al Simmons, ex-CIA agent, uses abilities derived from the pits of hell to fight for good in very dark places. #10 Static Shock, young Virgil Hawkins, can control electrical and magnetic fields to fight forces that always seem to find their way to his street.
All these characters and many more represent the African-American community well with great stories of heroism and fun. Thanks to editor Wes Carroll for the idea for this week's column.

The Promised Land by Pat Robinson 07.03.08
Last week I talked about the things that take place around the fun of going to a convention. This week it's the event itself and those who helped me rediscover my comic book mojo. Some very close friends of mine, The Hill family, took me back to my enjoyment of comic book conventions and through their eyes and adventures, I saw every part of what makes this type of show so much fun. Tommy HIll, in his search to fill in missing issues of Sgt. Rock, reminded of the real joy of collecting comics. There is no better feeling than to have a bag full of comics to add to your collection and at a good price to boot. Dave Hill showed me that the excitement you can feel for comic books can be shared with your children. As his dad did with him, he has passed this love to his own kids, Aisling and Arlo. He is fortunate enough to have a wonderfully patient wife in Gretchen who makes sure they all are where they're supposed to be and when. Aisling, like her dad and Aunt Mary, likes to draw. Like last year, she was one of the winners of the draw-off. Plus she, her dad and Mary presented the creator of Owly a book of their artwork to show their appreciation for his work. Arlo showed me how to be a babe-magnet. All it takes is a head full of curly hair, a big smile and a mini-storm trooper outfit. Mary and Brian reminded me of the great history of comic books. They brought prized issues from their large collection to be autographed by some of the giants of this industry. It was so much fun to watch them talking with Dick Giordano, Roy Thomas and Nick Cardy with respect and admiration. Becki HIll showed me the heart a fan must have. She stopped and shook hands with countless up-and coming comic artists and writers thanking them for their hard work in keeping comics alive. She told stories of how her children learned to read from comics and how much she appreciated those who made her husband Dave's trip to last years's convention so memorable, since it was regretfully his last. I am glad I got to see a small measure of what he did. I hope all comic book fans can be as fortunate and blessed as I am to have people to share this kind of adventure with. From the panels of comic book greats past, present, and future to the dealers room, to the art auction, Heroes Con is the best. The fans are friendly and patient; the staff work hard and it shows. Heroes Con also serves the community through its charity work with the blood drive and especially through the Hero Initiative. This is a group that raises money to help comic creators in need. I hope next year you all can join me at this wonderful event. I know i'll be going back. On one sad note, the fine artist Michael Turner has lost his long battle with cancer. He did so much in an all too short life.
Pat's Picks for July 11: DC: Action, Batman Confidential, Detective RIP, Final Crisis Requiem, JSA, Trinity Marvel: Amazing Spidergirl, Amazing Spiderman, Captain America White, Eternals, Guardians of the Galaxy, Invincible Iron Man, New Exiles, Secret Invasion Other: Battlestar Galactica Origins , Goon , Powers , Red Sonja , Spawn , Witchblade
We Have No Ice, But the Beer Is Cold by Pat Robinson 06.26.28
Every great movie or book has a phrase everyone remembers. For a big part of my trip to Heroes Con in Charlotte, North Carolina, this columns title was repeated often. As one of the comic writers said over the weekend "All you people want is the dirt!" Well, that's what we'll talk about this week. My whole trip was about being in the right place or wrong place at the right time. It began the night before we left when the burglar alarm at my comics shop went off at 10:30 pm. The first thing that came to mind was this is a warning to stay home, but it was a false alarm and all I lost was a good night's sleep (as we left at 4am). At 4 am the two members of our Heroes Con group who were least likely to oversleep did just that. Because of this our scheduled stop to pick up ice, (an item's name which will rear its head again before the weekend is over) was delayed which was a VERY good thing. If we had been on time, we would have been in the middle of an armed robbery at the convience store where we stopped for ice. After we got on the road, we got to see all the wonderful sights through bleery eyes that are between Columbus and Charlotte. These include a giant peach with a crack that would make a plumber proud. After a smooth arrival that included checking into the hotel and the convention, we enjoyed a return to the best enviroment a comic fan can be in. We ended the evening with a memorable birhtday party for Arlo, the bobble-headed Jedi. More on this cute ball of energy next week. Saturday was a lot of fun: listening to comic writers, artists, and editors tell stories about themselves and each other; seeing fans in great costumes; and row after row of comics old and older. That night was when the great misadventure began. This year, the art auction was held five blocks from the convention at the Alley Cat Club. We all had a half an hour from convention close until auction open. Add a rainstorm, unfamiliarity with the downtown area, and an attempt to use the public transportation and then the fun began. (One piece of advice to the Charlotte authorities; please list the trolly times under a cover instead of the way it is now... out in the open and not easy to read in a blowing rainstorm.) After arriving an hour into the art auction, we discovered that not only is there no place to sit and watch the pieces of art being sold for large amounts of money, but there was no room to eat at the lovely Penquin Resturant. So after a half hour to forty-five minutes of this fun, we went in search of food. As we walked the wet streets, we found places with $35 entrees, places with prices listed on menus with no decimal points (if you have to ask, you can't afford it) , places we could afford that were either closed or too crowded, and finally a place that we could get into and afford. We were seated, hungy, and ready to order. The waitress calmly came to and said those immortal words "Before you order, I must tell you we are out of ice, but the beer is cold." After all groaning and laughing together, we ordered, finding out they were out of a few other things like lemonade for me and eggplant for some of the others. A good time was still had by all. The waitress that night was the true hero, because she was never fazed by any of these comical setbacks. I was asked at the end of the weekend if I had a good time in my return to the comic book convention arena and I said YES. This was not because of the event so much as it was the people: the ones I met and especailly the ones I went with. Next week I will tell about how the passion of comics has been re-lit in me and the amazing family that helped me find it again.

To the Point by Pat Robinson 06.19.08
Not much new to dicuss this week in the comic world, but I want to talk simply about this business that I so love. I hope those who are reading comic books regularly will appreciate that this is really America's mythology. Bigger-than-life heroes in great adventures. Also, never be ashamed to tell your friends how much you love comics. You might be surprised that they do, too. The movie industry is making a living on comic-based films right now. Plus, comic books are a great way to get children to read. It's visual and fun and not as expensive as the newest video game. For all of you who once read about Supes or Spidey but have stopped, now is great time to return to Metropolis or Gotham City. Enjoy!

Beat the Heat: Stay Inside and Read a Comic Book by Pat Robinson 06.10.08
As the summer gears up, here's my two cents worth about what would be good summer reading. First, DC's Final Crisis and Marvel's Secret Invasion are in full swing. If you want to read about the death of a certain Manhunter from Mars and shape-shifting alien spies, these are for you. Other options include: Thor by writer Michael J. Straczynski which continues to chronicle the Thunder God's return to Earth; Captain America shows us a Cap for the violent 21st century; Batman is leading toward a new Caped Crusader; and The Boys, a CIA-like group that keeps those with super powers in line. If you want to keep up with the new big screen stars, there's Iron Man, Hulk, Wanted, Hellboy and, Batman. Or if you want watch the continuing adventures of past and present television shows, there is Battlestar Gallactica, Star Trek, Buffy, Angel, Heroes, Supernatural, and Serentity. For the comics based a on favorite novel there is Stephen King's Dark Tower, George R.R. Martin's Wild Cards, Laurel K. Hamilton's Anita Blake, Sherrilyn Kenyon's Lords of Avalon, and Jim Butcher's Dresden Files. Finally, to keep your young comic reader occupied there is Tiny Titans, Scooby Doo, Power Pack, Cartoon Network comics and Sonic. I hope as the heat is on, you can find something to read at the pool or in the air conditioning.
Pat's Picks for June 19: DC: Birds of Prey, Brave and the Bold, Superman/ Batman, Trinity Marvel: Amazing Spiderman, Guardians of the Galaxy, Iron Man, Punisher, Ultimate X-Men, Ultimate Fantastic Four, Wolverine Other: Darkness, First Born, Grendal, Star Wars: Legacy. If I Were A Casting Director... by Pat Robinson 06.05.08
As more comic book based movies are readying production, it becomes an important chore to choose the right man or woman for the job. Robert Downey, Christian Bale, even Michael Keaton have all proven to be good calculated risks. Now let's see who will be the next geek superstars. Thor, the mighty Norse god, is on the horizon. A few names have already been thrown around for the role. Brad Pitt, with his past role in "Troy", can certainly act and be muscular; several of the guys from the HBO series "Rome" certainly could fill the role; but my pick would be the WWE's HHH on looks alone and his proven ability wielding a hammer. Captain America is due in 2011. One person mentioned to don the red, white and blue long johns is Matthew (Do I Have to Wear a Shirt?) McConaughey. Maybe earlier in his career, but not now. A lot of the younger Hollywood guys like Ryan Gosling will be considered. I would pick either Rick Schroeder or (Wes, I can't believe I'm saying this) Chris O'Donnel. They both have that All-American look. When it comes time to choose the Big Red Cheese, Captain Marvel, it should be Patrick Warburton of Tick and Seinfeld fame. He has the chin for the role. Black Adam, his arch enemy, may well be Dwayne (the Rock) Johnson according to the director. If Wonder Woman was made ten years ago, only Catherine Zeta Jones would be my consideration, but today it would be Jessica Biel. Well, as it comes time for us to see these well loved characters on the big screen, let's hold judgement until we see them .Remember, many of us never believed Mr. Mom would utter those immortal words "I'm Batman" and we would be glad he did.
Pat's Picks for June 12th DC: Action, Booster Gold, Green Lantern Corps, Salvation Run, Titans, Trinity Marvel: Amasing Spiderman, Spidergirl, Eternals, New Exiles, Skaar Son of Hulk Other: Invicible, Lost Boys, Star Wars Rebellion, The Twelve
A Second Glance by Pat Robinson 05.29.08
In the summer, there are always big company events that steal the spotlight, but there are always some gems to look at for the first time or maybe give a second glance. Some of these include: Legion of Superheroes written by Jim Shooter. Shooter still brings out the best in these characters like he did when he was in his teens writing these heroes in the 1960's. Captain America is still interesting even without Steve Rogers. Locke and Key is a violent mystery concerning one family's attempt to start their lives anew after the death of a family member while living in a strange house full of secrets and shadows. Incredible Hercules continues to tell interesting stories about Marvel's resident god on Earth. Star Trek Year 4 picks up with the original cast of the television series in the fourth year of the original five-year mission. Brave and the Bold tells of the interaction between DC's many heroes with the wonderful art of the legendary George Perez. All of these books, plus many more, can add to a summer of enjoyable comic book reading.

Comic Book Research 101 by Pat Robinson 05.22.08
In the coming weeks and months, movie-goers and new comic readers may need a refresher course in order to prepare for new upcoming events. For those getting ready to go green once again in June (not the Al Gore fan club but the real Hulkamaniacs) and give "The Incredible Hulk" another chance, pick up any Hulk graphic novel by Peter David. For our return to Gotham City in July, pick up a copy of "The Killing Joke" at your local comic shop. It is considered the best and darkest story about the Joker. Next year when Wolverine stars in his own movie, it would help to read his graphic novel "Weapon X" which, like the movie, is about him becoming Wolverine. Other less mainstream comic movies coming out have their own stories to be read in comic form. These include " Hellboy 2", "Wanted", and next year's "Watchmen". As with any literary character , comic book or otherwise, it never hurts to know a little about their background. As for the comic readers who are trying one of the two mega summer events, some background would certainly add to the enjoyment. For Marvel's "Secret Invasion", read any graphic novels about the Skrulls and specifically "Secret War" which deals with Nick Fury's suspicions that something was not right in the Marvel Universe. For DC"s "Final Crisis", pick up any of the graphic novels with the word crisis in the title, especially "Crisis on Infinite Earths" and "The Infinite Crisis." Be sure to study hard; there could be a pop quiz.

A Series 23 Years in the Making by Pat Robinson 05.15.08
In the 1980's , DC's Crisis on Infinite Earths resulted in the death of the Flash (Barry Allen) . This is the one comic book death among many (Superman , Jason Todd , Aunt May , and Jean Grey ) that has never been reversed; until now. Last week , DC Universe #0 gave readers a preview of the Final Crisis and all its side series and at the end the big surprise : Barry Allen. I hope they know what they are doing. The series that will be part of this grand event will be : Legion of Three Worlds - Prime Evil. A story in the 31st Century where Superman and the Legion of Superheroes face Superman Prime; Batman RIP which is rumored to have the changing of the guard; Wonder Woman Whom the Gods Forsake, a story concerning battles between the women of Paradise Island and a race of warrior men ; Green Lantern Blackest Night Prelude. The continuing story of the coming of the Black Lanterns in 2009. Final Crisis : the Day Evil Won is self explanitory. It's going to be a summer of change; so what else is new?

Let The Final Crisis Begin by Pat Robinson 04.24.08
For almost four years , DC Comics has been preparing the comic reader for it's "Final Crisis". From the Identity Crisis, where mainstream mystery writer Brad Meltzer, revealed how far some heroes would go to stop the evil in the world; to the Infinite Crisis, where the sins of the original "Crisis on Infinite Earths" came home to roost in the form of Superboy- Prime. This was followed by two year-long weekly series "52" and the "Countdown" which brought us the 52 different Earths with all their heroes and problems and the countdown to the Final Crisis-where evil wins. Any good comic story has always been the struggle between the good guys and the bad guys, with good usually coming out on top overall; but supposedly not this time. Grant Morrison, writer of the "Final Crisis" and Batman's newest storyline. Batman RIP says that everything will change forever. He says we will never see Bruce Wayne again as we see him now and that a new Caped Crusader will have to found. The Final Crisis will cover the entire history of the DC universe; from Kamandi to the Legion of Super-heroes. It begins with Batman and leads right into the Crisis story. I guess when this one is over , the next crisis to deal with will be the mid-life one.

And the Children Shall Lead by Pat Robinson 04.17.08
With Free Comic Book Day on the horizon, I thought it would be a good time to talk about choosing some comics to get your youngsters started in this wonderful , fun pasttime. First there is always the comics based on the cartoons they see on television. These include Scooby Doo, Justice League , Batman Strikes, Teen Titans and a comic devoted to the Cartoon Network shows. There are the comics , that the parents grew up on; these would be any of the books associated with Archie and the gang in Riverdale. Young adult versions of the main stream heroes such as Spiderman , Hulk , Iron Man , and the Avengers are always popular. Some of the more imagination driven books include Bone , a Pogo style comic; Gon , which is about a dimunitive dinosaur and his travels thru the animal kingdom; and Power Pack, which is the adventures of normal kids suddenly endowed with super powers. Finally, the black and white reprints of old DC and Marvel books from yesteryear are a good way for anyone to get in on the ground floor of the hero's careers(plus they could color in them if they so desired). The important thing is to get them reading and using their imaginations.
Pat's Picks for April 24th: DC: Countdown, Justice League, Superman/Batman Marvel: Hulk, Mighty Avengers, Exiles, Thor, X-Force. Other: Army of Darkness/Xena, Darkness/ Eva, Dynamo 5, Spawn.
The Butler Did It by Pat Robinson 04.10.08
As Marvel's Secret Invasion begins, comic readers are reminded that it's not the big-name famous heroes that you have to worry about, but the quiet ones who work behind the scenes. Several years ago, at the beginning of DC's Infinite Crisis, it was not Superman, Wonder Woman, or even Batman that discovered the plot to destroy the heroes by Maxwell Lord, it was Blue Beetle. Maxwell Lord, the villian of the piece, is someone most readers or heroes didn't give a second thought to and Blue Beetle was a character no one took seriously. Each played a big part in this big event. The same has begun in Marvel's newest universe-spanning story. It has already been revealed that the Skrulls have infiltrated Earth when Elektra wass killed and it turned out she was a Skrull. As the story continues, chaos reigns as Earth's defenses are compromised by attacks from within. Comander Dugan, Nick Fury's right hand man and Jarvis, the Avengers trusted butler, are both revealed to be Skrull agents. Their actions leave Earth open to attack from outer space. Reed Richards and Hank Pym are left to discover how to counteract this threat until we find out that the unasuming Pym can not be trusted either. So instead of the Spiderman's and Wolverine's of the Marvel universe, we should be taking second looks at Aunt May and the guys who clean up after the city-destroying battles.
Pat's Picks for April 17th DC: Batman & the Outsiders, Catwoman, Countdown, Flash, Robin, Superman Marvel: Amazing Spiderman, Captain America, Captain Marvel, Ghost Rider, Hercules, Iron Man, X-Factor Other: Army of Darkness, Grendel, Darkness, Lone Ranger.
The Past Collides with the Present by Pat Robinson 04.03.08
In real and the comic world the past and the present is about to face off with possible explosive consequences. First in the world of new comic stories, Alex Ross is about to bring the fans a faceoff between heroes of World War 2 and those of today. In his new series "Avengers/ Invaders", Ross and co-writer Jim Krueger ,who worked previously together on "Earth X", bring the Captain America, Submariner, Human Torch of the 1940's group the Invaders into the present. In so doing they will face off with the modern hero group the Avengers. Ross will bring his unique art and his love for Golden Age characters into this new series. Even though the new Captain America (Bucky) is not part of the Avengers, Ross promised a meeting between him and Steve Rogers ,the original Cap. In the all too real world, the family of Jerry Siegel has won a court case making them half owners in Siegel's creation Superman. According to court papers the Siegels and DC Comics share the ownership of the big blue boy scout 50-50. Copyright laws have been changing constantly in recent years which affect characters created in the 40's including Captain America and Mickey Mouse and have brought about lawsuits concerning long term ownership. DC's parent company Time - Warner will surely appeal.
Pat's Picks for April 10th: Marvel: Amazing Spidergirl, Amazing Spiderman, Last Defenders, Nova, Punisher, Wolverine DC: Batman Confidential, Batman: Deathmask, Green Lantern Corps, JSA, Wonder Woman Other: Dresden Files, Serenity, Darkness.
It Can't Be That Secret; It Has Its Own Comic by Pat Robinson 03.27.08
The Secret Invasion is upon us. Next week Marvel's summer blockbuster (they hope) event begins to spread across the comic universe. The story began when Marvel's secret group of mover's and shakers , Mr. Fantastic, Charles Xavier, Iron Man, Dr. Strange, etc., discovered that when the female assasin Elektra was killed in a fight, she changed into one dead Skrull. The Skrulls are an alien race of shape-shiters who are always bent on ruling everything. (sorta like Dick Cheney) Now the real fun begins; the old who can you trust scenerio. In this case : no one. I hope that it will be full of suprises like maybe this explains why Iron Man has been acting more dictitorial than usual or that Aunt May who is older than dirty dirt and is still cooking those balanced meals for Peter. Regardless , it should be worth a look. Along with the many great movie trailers based on comics in the theatres and on line(Hulk, Iron Man, Batman, Wanted) be on the lookout for publicity pictures from Watchmen and G.I. Joe. It's going to be a great year for us movie nerds.
Pat's Picks for April 3 : DC: Action, Countdown, Detective, Infinity Inc. Marvel : Amazing Spiderman, Dark Tower, Secret Invasion, Ultimates. Young X-Men Other: Buffy the Vampire Slayer, G.I. Joe, Kick Ass, Project Superhero.
Wonderful Toys? by Pat Robinson 03.20.08
One aspect of the comic book industry , I don't touch on much is the toy and action figuire market. Billions are spent annually collecting the plastic likenesses of the world's greatest super-heroes. Everyone from the biggies like Superman , Batman , Wonder Woman and Spiderman to the lesser known do-gooders like Ant-Man and Red Tornado are immotalized each year in six to eighteen inch replicas. As technolgy has advanced, the toys and their extras look more realistic each year. Those who buy them are either hard core collectors who haunt the Wal-marts at 2am to get the newest versions of the Transformers or those who just like to have them decorating their homes. Each type keeps guys like Todd McFarlane in business. McFarlane is known as the creator of Spawn , but his real impact in the industry is as the head of one of the best toymakers in the world. From dozens of versions of Spawn to Kiss (the rock band) to Nascar figuires, McFarlane does it all. If any one ever makes fun of you for collecting toys , just refer them to Steve Geppi's museum in Baltimore which houses millions of dollars worth of comic book related items including toys and comics from the last seventy years. Even George W. Bush has an action figuire. For all I know , he has a version which fakes his induction into the G.I.Joe toy line.

From the Drawn Page to the Big (or Small ) Screen by Pat Robinson 03.13.08
The last few years, the comic companies have turned some of their more famous (and some of the lesser known) properties into animated features for straight to DVD movies. The Ultimates became "Ultimate Avengers" in two well received features, as did Iron Man and Dr. Strange. Marvel was trying to duplicate the sucess that DC had with their collection of Batman animated movies such as "Mask of the Phantasim" and "The "Return of the Joker." The next step for the respective companies is the re-telling of specific comic stories in animated form. Last Fall, DC released "Superman : Doomsday", which tells a shortened version of the Death of Superman at the hands of Doomsday. The newest addition to these great features is "Justice League: New Frontier". This is Darwyn Cooke's version of how the heroes of the pre-Vietnam era came together to face a global threat. It tells an adult story of how Hal Jordan, who was recovering from the personal horrors of the Korean War, takes his place beside Superman, Batman , Wonder Woman, as the galactic hero Green Lantern. This is a great adaption of the graphic novel, but as with most movies taken from books, there are some parts left out. The graphic novel is still available to read if you want to know more. Marvel is rumored to be working on a animated version of "Planet Hulk". I hope that is true as it would be a great addition to these other DVDs. Pat's Picks for March 20th: DC: All Star Superman , Batman and the Outsiders , Countdown , Flash , Robin . Marvel: Amazing Spiderman , Captain America , Captain Marvel , Ghost Rider , Incredible Hercules , Iron Man , Thor. Other: Darkness , Ex Machina , Red Sonja , Savage Dragon.
Coming to a Comic Shop Near You..or May Already Be There. by Pat Robinson 03.06.08
I know with so many new titles coming out each month and money being tight, it's hard to pick new things to try ; hopefully this list may help. Both Dynamite Comics and Marvel are using the idea of bringing heroes who were active during World War II foward into the here and now. Dynamite's entry is "Project Superpowers". Heroes and villians with great names such as Fighting Yank , Green Lama, and the American Spirit are brought to life by a team of artists and writers that includes the great Alex Ross. Marvel has countered with J. Michael Straczynski's "The Twelve". These heroes fought beside such Marvel superstars as Captain America and Submariner during the War only to be put in suspended animation and awakened in 2008. Both books are full of new , sometimes offbeat characters that I have enjoyed meeting. Other books to try include a new Serinity/ Firefly mini-series written by Joss Whedon the creator of the TV series/movie; "Hulk" is about a rampaging red colored Hulk whose identity has yet to be revealed; "X-Force" a new X-Men series spun off from the recently compleated Messiah Complex story. It involves a mutant strike force which includes resident badasses Wolverine, X-23, Warhawk , and Wolfbane. As it gets closer to summer, I'll let you know what to be on the look out for.

Wonders from Wonder-Con by Pat Robinson 02.27.08
This past weekend in San Francisco, the first big comic/science fiction of the year was held. Along with the great comic panels, actors and directors attended to show off their new movie projects. J. Michael Straczynski reported that he is no longer exclusively working for Marvel. He will continue to write Thor and his own creation The Twelve for Marvel, but now he will work also at DC and Image. He did not reveal what he will be doing at DC, but at Image his titles include two new titles: Justice and Ten Grand. Darwyn Cooke was on hand to discuss the release of the animated DVD adaptation of his Justice League New Frontier comics. Other projects promoted included the unveiling of the new Spiderman cartoon series which should begin on the CW network's Saturday line-up in March; new movie trailers for Iron Man and Batman: the Dark Knight; some talk of the Justice League movie's filming moving from Australia to Canada; the respectve casts of Get Smart and the X-Files were on hand to promote their summer releases. In our general area there are three annual conventions within driving distance: Dragon*Con in Atlanta on Labor Day Weekend; Mega- Con in Orlando in March; and the best comic book-only-convention Heroes-Con in Charlotte in June. Go. Enjoy. Spend tons of Money.

Okay, But What Have You Done for Me Lately? by Pat Robinson 02.20.08
Sometimes after the finish of a great comic book event like Marvel's Civil War or DC's Infinite Crisis, comic fans look quickly to what will excite and interest them next. Well, DC and Marvel have taken on the mindset that each of their respective comic universes are now in the constant state of flux. Examples of this include Marvel’s “House of M" event several years ago that led to changes in Wolverine's story by opening his mind to lost memories which led to the Wolverine Origins comic. This mutant-changing story also led to the recently finished "Messiah Complex" which, with the assassination of Charles Xavier by Bishop, now leads to the "Divided We Stand." Also, the Civil War is responsible for changes to Spiderman in "Brand New Day" and to Captain America with the coming of the Winter Soldier (Bucky) as the new Cap replacing the assassinated Steve Rogers. This Spring we will next contend with the secret Skrull invasion. DC has also expanded the scope of their stories. The present "Countdown" series has roots all the way back to "Crisis on Infinite Earths" over twenty years ago. That crisis led to the murder-mystery "Identity Crisis", which led to the "Infinite Crisis" which led to "52" which led to the "Countdown" and soon to this summer's "Final Crisis". Phew I'm out of breath. All of this shows that when the comic companies chose to aim toward an older audience, they not only added more adult content, but made long-term storylines that a younger crowd might not have the patience to keep up with, but are perfect for an adult reader used to following authors who write multiple sequels. A sad moment for comic fans is the passing of comic writer Steve Gerber at the age of 60. Mr. Gerber is the man who created the iconic comic book character Howard the Duck. Before Aflac, Howard ruled… not only in comics, but also on the big screen. What Do Britney Spears, Iron Man and Batman Have In Common? by Pat Robinson 02.13.08
You can always tell when Marvel has a new movie on the horizon; they have that hero appearing all over the Marvel Universe. Last year it was Spiderman donning the black costume to ready movie-goers and comic-readers for Spiderman 3. This year it's Iron Man. Already, he has become the most despised character in Marvel because of his participation in the Marvel Civil War. Many readers blame him for the death of Captain America (Steve Rogers). Besides his own monthly title, Tony Stark's metal alter-ego is in a mini-series in the Ultimate Universe written by scince fiction author Orson Scott Card. The Ulimate Iron Man is also facing off with Marvel's other summer movie star the Hulk in "Ultimate Human. Iron Man is also in the "New Avengers" and the "Avengers Initiative". And finally, he has also been guest starring in Marvel's young adult comic book with Power Pack. It's a good thing Tony Stark has his own press secretary. Over at DC, the new Dark Knight movie is also putting Batman center-stage in upcoming stories. The buzz is that he will be a central part in the summer's big event: The Final Crisis. Also stories concerning Batman's past and future will be in "Batman" and "Detective" plus his regular stints in "Justice League" and "The Outsiders". No wonder he is always in such a dark mood, he never gets any sleep.

All We Need Now is a Shower Scene 02.07.08
Like the famous scene from the Dallas TV series where Bobby comes out of the shower and everything from the past year is erased, Marvel editor in chief Joe Quesada has done the same thing to our favorite wall-crawlin' hero Spiderman. After making a deal with Marvel's version of the devil, Mephisto, to save his mortally wounded Aunt May, his marriage to Mary Jane was erased from history. This in itself was not necessarily a bad move, but the other changes that came with it have enraged many Spidey fans. The changes include the return of his web-shooters instead of his organic ability to shoot webs from his body(like in the movies), Harry Osborn is alive, without the knowledge that he was the Green Goblin,Aunt May is of course alive and taking care of Peter since he is no longer a teacher, and worst of all, his identity is again a secret;even though it is acknowledged that he revealed his secret identity to the world,no body remembers who he is,including those who already knew like Daredevil and the Avengers. The changes even upset the departing writer of Amazing Spiderman J.Michael Straczynski. JMS(you think I'm gonna try spelling that last name again) ,who for the last few years has brought the Spiderman titles back from the brink of the clone storyline, expressed disappointment in Cup-of-Joe's decision for Spidey's new direction in interviews online. I have told my customers that I am taking a wait and see attitude concerning the new stories. Actually, the first couple of the new issues(which now comes out three times a month) are pretty good. Time will tell; Quesada has even said if the public doesn't embrace the new stories(if sales suffer) ,he'll consider fixing things. New items to be on the lookout for in the comic world: DC continues to head toward the Final Crisis and the Green Lantern books are setting up for a story in 2009 concerning the Black Lantern; Marvel's X-Men follows the Messiah Complex with Divided We Stand, which leads to X-Men #500 in July;and Dark Horse will be offering a new mini-series based on the cast from Joss Whedon's Tv series Firefly.
